Cette médaille commémore l'un des plus célèbres stormos de la Regia Aeronautica (l'armée de l'air italienne) durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le 30° Stormo Bombardamento Terrestre. Cette unité était équipée de trimoteurs Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 Sparviero. Initialement basé à Pise, le 30° Stormo a opéré principalement en Méditerranée et au-dessus de l'Afrique du Nord (Libye).
