Atlas sive Cosmographicae meditationes de fabrica mundi et fabricati figura. Denuo auctus. Editio quarta. Folio: [12 (of 16) incl. engr. title]-29/360-[35] pp.; 150 hand-coloured maps mounted on guards (missing text ff. *2 & *3 (Epitaph), A1-C5 ("De mundi creatione") and 4 engr. partial titles, uniform toning, some maps mounted on later/mod. guards, 2 maps bound in wrong order but all present, marg. dampst. and some sm. marg. tears, mostly expertly restored, in the indices with occ. loss of bl. margins). - Fourth Latin edition of the famous "Mercator-Hondius" atlas (1st Amsterdam 1606; 1st Duisburg ed. by Mercator's heirs 1595) containing 4 new maps (Galicia, Catalonia, Limburg and Rügen). Divided in 7 parts: 1. World, Northern and Eastern Europe, 2. Spain and Portugal, 3. France and Switzerland, 4. The Netherlands, 5. Germany, 6. Italy and Southeastern Europe and 7. Africa, Asia and America, containing all 150 maps including the world map ("Nova totius terrarum Orbis geographica ac hydrographica tabula"), a polar map, continental maps (Europe, Africa, Asia, America), partial maps of i.a. the Strait of Magellan, the "Spice Islands" (South East Asia), Iceland, etc. - In December 1613, friar Francisco de Jesus expurgated the Atlas according to the "Index librorum prohibitorum" on the authority of the Grand Inquisitor Bernardo de Sandoval y Rojas (1546-1618) (ms. entry on verso of title). He removed two leaves from the introduction as well as the first 28 text leaves containing the "De mundi creatione", and purgated some passages in the text, either by crossing it out or covering it with paper. Fr. de Jesus was part of the commission responsible for the Spanish "Index librorum prohibitorum et expurgatorum" published by Sandoval y Rojas. Ref.
