Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Folio: [12 incl. engr. title] pp.; 91 maps, all but last 2 partly and rudimentary hand-coloured (engr. title bound backwards, st. on verso of Russia map not affecting pl., marg. dampst. on some maps rarely affecting plate (maps "Aevi veteris" and "Palestinae" sl. more dampst.), edges of few maps reinforced on verso, sm. tear in lower marg. of maps of China and Turkey without loss). - Complete hand-coloured copy of the third Dutch edition of the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" (1st Dutch 1571, 1st Latin 1570), and the last edition printed during the lifetime of the great Antwerp cartographer Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598), creator of the first modern atlas. It is composed of an engraved allegorical title with female personifications of the continents, Ortelius' portrait in a large engraved medaillon with Renaissance borders and all 91 maps with Dutch text on verso, comprising the world map in its 3rd state of the 2nd plate (undated, clouds in the corners), 4 continental maps and maps not only of European regions and countries, but also maps of China, India, Japan, the Pacific, Persia, and of Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. - Ref.
