Description
Extensive collection of over 2,000 (!) medical recipes. Folio: 689 ff. (old foliation in bottom corner, skipping 39bis and 272; f. 613 torn out [?], few later ff. loosely inserted), paper, Dutch (few sm. texts in French or Latin). - One of the most extensive and important collections of medical recipes in Dutch, compiled by the Antwerp physician Abraham vander Veken (his name and age ["74 j."] given at the very end [f. 689v]). He is named in a number of documents from the years 1584-1617 in the Felixarchief (Antwerp) and was the second husband of Anne Faulx, whose grandchild (of her first marriage to Pieter Jordaens) was to become the famous Antwerp painter Jacques (or Jacob) Jordaens (1593-1678). - The manuscript opens with moralising Latin and Dutch verses (front endpaper, f. 1r), followed by an exhaustive "Register van desen boecke" (2r-47r, incl. a f. 39bis), a Latin text on alchemy accompanied by Dutch and French verses, 497 numb. recipes covering almost any bodily problem (48r-179v), followed by texts on eyes and face, sinews, gout, pest, distillation etc. (180r-251v), 1384 numb. alphabetically arranged recipes (252r-616r) with "inserted" paragraphs on herbs (366r-385), head and face (410-417), "Laserije" (436-445), purgatives (474r-486r, "Dit heb ick van Mr Willem op het Sandt"), pest (486r-503) and another series of 124 numb. recipes (i.a. on pest, ff. 563-590), "Uijt alarts Boeck" (616v-627r), various smaller texts and a final section on "wateren" (629v-656) and on the omnipresent pest (657-689v). Some texts refer to Antwerp citizens (287r, 288r), to "Den raet van M. Jan Calaber tot Loven doctoor, teghen de pestilencie" (534r-v) or to "Consilium magistri Cornelij Rolants ad inuocandum menstruum" (536r). This major body of recipes is a unique and very valuable source for medical practices in Renaissance Antwerp. - Joined: Small ms., c. 16 x 10,5 cm: 31 [1, 2 bl., 28, 1 bl.] ff. with 141 (of 287 [?]) numb. riddles and solutions (missing n. 1-66 and 228-277), paper, Dutch.
