The mathematician Monge (1746-1818), commonly presented as the inventor of descriptive geometry, was one of the founders of the École polytechnique. Hachette (1769-1834) is considered to be Gaspard Monge's main successor in geometry. He was named assistant to Monge in the department of descriptive geometry at the École polytechnique. - Prov.
