Introduced in 1963, the Rolex Daytona reference 6239 was the first model in the brands now-legendary line of chronographs specifically designed for motorsport enthusiasts. Positioned at the beginning of the Daytona series, it was produced alongside early references such as the 6241, 6262, and 6263, forming the foundation of what would become one of the most celebrated chronograph families in horological history.
The 6239 featured a stainless steel case, tachymeter scale engraved on a steel or metal bezel rather than the dial, and was powered by the manual-winding 722 calibre, renowned for its robustness, precision, and ease of servicing. With its clean dial layout, simple yet functional pushers, and strong motorsport heritage, the reference quickly established itself as a favourite among drivers and collectors alike, laying the groundwork for subsequent exotic and Paul Newman-style dials.
The present watch is fitted with a later-produced interpretation dial inspired by the legendary 'Exotic Paul Newman' configuration. Known for its meticulous execution, this dial reproduces the signature design contrasting registers, offering a visually compelling representation of the exotic style.
Offered with full disclosure, the watch represents an opportunity for collectors who value the aesthetic and historical resonance of the early Daytona chronographs. Currently working but a service is recommended.
