Beneath the apparent simplicity of his works lies a profound philosophical depth. A decisive turning point in Nemukhin's artistic career came with his adoption of playing cards as a principal expressive device. In 1965, cards, which attracted the artist through their "intriguing geometric qualities", became the foundation of a concept that remained central to his practice throughout his life. The geometric clarity and formal simplicity of the playing card, together with the symbolic associations of chance and gambling, enabled Nemukhin to create works in which the illusory and the timeless intertwine with reality.
