Provenance
Personal collection of Mr. de Francony, France.
Founded in Nice in 1965 by the two sons of gallerist Anne de Francony, the Société des Éditions d'Art de Francony grew out of the activity of the Galerie Anne de Francony. The gallery represented figurative artists working on the Côte d'Azur and in Paris, including Le Pho.
During this period, the region was a major artistic centre, home to Picasso in Mougins and Chagall in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. It was also marked by the recent openings of the Musée Fernand Léger (1960) and the Fondation Maeght (1964). It was at this time that Le Pho created his first lithograph, Fleurs, at the publisher's request in 1966. De Francony personally supervised every stage of the printing process, working closely with the artist on colour adjustments and technical refinements to ensure a level of craftsmanship that was not matched by later editions produced by other publishers.
During their collaboration, Le Pho produced four lithographic subjects, each issued in an edition of 175 impressions on white Arches wove paper (numbered 1/175 to 175/175) and 25 impressions on cream Arches wove paper (numbered I/XXV to XXV/XXV), along with a small number of Épreuve d'Artiste.
The present lithograph is an Épreuve d'Artiste from the personal collection of Mr de Francony, and despite its sixty years of age, has retained its original freshness.
