Do Xuan Doan (1937-2015) was a renowned artist who played a significant role in the development of modern and contemporary art in Vietnam. He graduated from the Hanoi College of Fine Arts (formerly École de l'Indochine) in 1961 and developed a unique style that blends traditional Vietnamese themes with modern techniques. His formative years coincided with the Vietnam War, during which he joined the army, an experience that infused his artistic expression with resilience and social consciousness.
Do Xuan Doan's paintings often depict rural scenes featuring ancient houses, old streets, and ordinary people, capturing the harmony between humans and nature. His works are characterised by their vibrant colour palettes, bold brushstrokes, and dynamic compositions. Using lacquer on wood, a traditional Vietnamese medium, adds notable depth, richness, and texture to each piece.
Defying the constraints of conventional categorisation, Do Xuan Doan seamlessly traverses the realms of realism, expressionism, surrealism, and abstraction. As one of the founders and leaders of the Young Artists Association in 1966, he played a pivotal role in encouraging innovation and experimentation among young artists, significantly influencing the development of modern Vietnamese art.
Do Xuan Doan's contributions to Vietnamese culture and his role in shaping the Young Artists Association remain significant. His contemporary lacquer works continue to inspire and resonate with viewers, exemplifying creativity, resilience, and a commitment to pushing artistic boundaries. His enduring legacy reminds us of the power of expression and the beauty of capturing everyday life through visual art.
