Description
CHINA, 20th century
Painting on silk mounted on a stretcher depicting a Buddhist lama or dignitary dressed in a rich monastic robe embroidered with gold motifs. He is seated in a meditative posture on a colourful cushion, holding a dharmachakra (Dharma wheel), the symbol of the Buddha's teachings. His expressive, finely detailed face and characteristic yellow headdress suggest a representation of a master of the Gelugpa school, perhaps a Panchen Lama or a Jebtsundamba Khutuktu from Mongolia. The background is neutral, highlighting the finesse of the line and the elegance of the colours.
Unframed: 81 x 62 cm. With frame: 97 x 78 cm.
(Some wear marks visible on the fabric, notably traces of damp and folds, a tear on the left-hand side. 19th century wood and gilded stucco frame with visible wear and tears. The silk used to be mounted on a canvas stretcher.)
Provenance: - European private collection
Note: This painting has stylistic similarities with a portrait of the Qianlong emperor on a thangka, which itself dates from the 18th century. Our work, which is much later, illustrates the influence of traditional Tibetan thangkas, although it is mounted on a Western-style stretcher. It bears witness to the refinement of Buddhist painting and the veneration accorded to spiritual masters in the Tibetan and Mongol world.
