An important imperial polychrome porcelain inlaid lacquer panel, China, Qing dynasty, Qianlong period (1736-1795) ??? ????????? ??????????????????????????????? ??? ????????1950??????????????Hermitage Palace??????? ????????? This type of furniture was mainly used in the study chambers of the imperial court. In its permanent exhibition devoted to the furniture of Qing palaces and the daily life of emperors and empresses, the Shenyang Imperial Palace Museum reconstructs various imperial interiors using carefully reconstructed sets of furniture based on historical archives and court paintings. The section entitled "Reading the classics and studying the texts" includes a large screen decorated very much like our panel (figs. 1 and 2). The centre of the composition, made up of sheets of rose family porcelain forming a bogu (??, "precious antique objects") decoration, depicts a planter of sacred lilies (Rohdea japonica) in bloom on a pedestal, accompanied by branches of peaches, persimmons and a ruyi sceptre, all motifs symbolising happiness, prosperity and longevity. The decoration is enriched by several imperial seals: in the upper centre is the inscription Qianlong yulan zhi bao (Imperial Treasury for Reading Qianlong), on the right Leshan tang (Pavilion of Virtuous Joy), and in the lower left Qianlong chenhan (Imperial Calligraphy of Qianlong) and Weijing weiyi (Perfect Concentration and Unity). Taken as a whole, this composition has the refined appearance of a true imperial court painting. This type of furniture was principally intended for the imperial study rooms. In its permanent exhibition devoted to Qing palace furniture and the daily life of emperors and empresses, the Shenyang Imperial Palace Museum reconstructs a series of imperial interiors, based upon historical records and court paintings, through carefully reassembled groups of furniture. Within the section entitled "Reading the Classics and the Study of Texts" is displayed an important screen decorated in a manner closely comparable to the present panel (figs. 1 and 2). The centre of the composition, formed of famille rose porcelain plaques arranged as a bogu (??, "precious antiquities") design, depicts a jardiniere of sacred lilies (Rohdea japonica) in bloom resting upon a stand, accompanied by branches of peach and persimmon together with a ruyi sceptre, all auspicious motifs symbolising happiness, prosperity and longevity. The decoration is further enriched with several imperial seals: at the upper centre appears the inscription Qianlong yulan zhi bao ("Imperial Treasure for the Reading of Qianlong"); to the right, Leshan tang ("Hall of Joyful Virtue"); and at the lower left, Qianlong chenhan ("Imperial Calligraphy of Qianlong") together with Weijing weiyi ("Perfect Concentration and Unity"). The ensemble lends the composition the refined appearance of an imperial court painting.
