Description
A Tibetan thangka depicting “Śākyamuni”. In the centre sits a large, golden Śākyamuni in a meditative posture, holding a black alms bowl. He is surrounded by an ornate mandorla of gold patterns, lotus petals and celestial beings. Surrounding the central Buddha are numerous smaller narrative scenes illustrating important episodes from Buddhist stories and teachings. The upper section of the thangka features divine or enlightened figures seated on lotus thrones, stūpas, and symbolic imagery associated with wisdom, compassion and enlightenment. The lower section depicts further scenes of teaching, meditation and spiritual practice, as well as guardians and attendants. 19th/20th century. L: 105 x 74 cm. Perfect condition.
