VIETNAM, 19th century
Large rectangular altar tablet in gilded lacquered wood, featuring a red and gold decoration of dragons winding through foliage on the border, surrounding a cartouche bearing the inscription: "高閣奠神敕贈洪謨偉略敦厚上等神之位" ("Cao các điện thần sắc tặng Hồng mô vĩ lược đôn hậu thượng đẳng thần chi vị", translating as “Tablet consecrated in the high pavilion to the god,honoured by imperial decree with the title ‘Great Design and Remarkable Strategy, Benevolence and Integrity’, ranked among the deities of the highest order”) surmounted by a sun. Featuring on one side an inscription corresponding to the reign of Emperor Minh Mang "明命拾捌年丁酉造" (the 18th year of Minh Mang’s reign, i.e. 1837) and on the other "海陵縣石桿社奉祀" indicating its use in the temple at Thạch Cán, in Hải Lăng district.
