Description
ARISTOPHANES and BARTA (Laszlo). Lysistrata. New translation by C. Poyard. 40 etchings by Barta.
A remarkable copy, in a superb mosaic binding by Lazlo Barta, enriched with 4 large original watercolours by the artist to decorate the linings and endpapers.
Paris, Aux Éditions de la Cigogne, 1932.
In-4 (260x330 mm), midnight blue morocco; on the front cover, a large mosaic composition of morocco and calfskin dyed in various colours (duck blue, violet, taupe, beige, ecru, brown, green and ochre), depicting a romantic scene against a background of cold-stamped diamond patterns inlaid with black morocco; a small colour mosaic composition in the centre of the back cover on the same diamond-patterned background, smooth spine decorated with the title in Chinese style in large letters, inner edging with a triple gilt fillet, lining and endpapers decorated with 4 original colour watercolours by Barta, gilt headband on endpapers, covers and spine preserved, box with edging.
98 pages, 40 etchings by Barta in black, both in the text and as inserts, including one as a frontispiece.
Spine sun-faded, slight white marks on the leather, minor scuffing on the edges, a few faint foxing spots of no consequence, fading on some of the etchings.
A deluxe edition of this comedy by Aristophanes, depicting the sex strike launched by the women of Athens to force their husbands to end the war against Sparta. Presented in the new translation by C. Poyard, it is illustrated with 40 delicate etchings by the Hungarian artist Laszlo Barta (1902–1961).
Limited edition of 109 numbered copies; this is one of 59 copies on Montval paper (No. 65). This copy is enhanced with four large original watercolours by Barta (230x315 mm) adorning the endpapers and flyleaves, as well as a signed autograph note from the artist, certifying that the binding, specially commissioned by Éditions de la Cigogne for this copy and decorated by him personally, will never be reproduced.
A charming and unique binding, elegantly decorated by Barta.
