[MEDICAL MANUSCRIPT 1780] - HATTE (François). Medical consultations addressed to Boerhaave, with replies from this renowned physician. Unpublished translation of Boerhaave’s famous “Consultationes medicae” by a learned physician from Compiègne, enriched with his critical reflections. No place, no date [circa 1780]. Quarto volume (225 x 182 mm). Fawn sheepskin, plain spine with decoration. 19th-century binding. 3 unnumbered pages, 358 pages. Binding damaged, spine missing, first joint split, loose at the hinge. A few scattered foxing spots. An interesting manuscript written in black ink, containing the translation of the first twenty-seven consultations from Boerhaave’s famous treatise, Consultationes medicae, sive sylloge epistolarum cum responsis (1744), a reference work on clinical cases in 18th-century Europe. The author of this work is identified on the title page as ‘Translated from the Latin by J. Hatté, physician at Compiègne’ and notes opposite: ‘We have added our own medical and practical reflections to each of the consultations and responses to Boerhaave. ’ These are in fact critical notes highlighting the omissions of details deemed necessary for establishing a reliable diagnosis, the ineffectiveness of certain treatments proposed by Boerhaave, followed by alternative therapeutic solutions proposed by the Compiègne practitioner, which he considers more effective than those of his illustrious predecessor”. Behind the name J. Hatté lies almost certainly Jean-François Hatté, whose name appears in the minutes of the Hôtel-Dieu de Compiègne between 1770 and 1785, where he is described as ‘doctor of medicine, a citizen of this town ". It should be noted that Boerhaave’s *Consultationes medicae* circulated in their original Latin version—the working language of medicine at that time—and were never the subject of a printed French translation under the title *Consultations de médecine...*.
