DUPLEIX (Scipio). Memoirs of Gaul, from the Flood to the establishment of the French monarchy. Paris, Laurent Sonnius, 1619. 2 volumes, small quarto, marbled calfskin, triple gilt rule, coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, red edges (18th-century binding). First edition of this history of Gallic antiquity and the Frankish conquests, ‘remarkable for its research and accuracy’ (Hœfer). The work is dedicated to Louis XIII, who, in the same year, appointed the author as historiographer of France and Councillor of State. It is adorned with a beautiful allegorical frontispiece engraved by Jaspar Isaac, depicting the young monarch crowned by France and Gaul. Scipion Dupleix (1569–1661), for whom this was his first historiographical treatise, was the first French historian to cite, in the margins of the text, the sources from which he drew the facts he recounts. A philosopher, grammarian and historian originally from Condom in Armagnac, he had been the tutor to Antoine de Bourbon-Bueil, the legitimised son of Henry IV. This copy has been divided into two volumes by the bookbinder. A very fine copy bearing the coat of arms of the Marquise de Pompadour (1765, no. 2633), with the ex-libris of the Château de Crécy, acquired in 1746 by the royal favourite and ceded to the Duke of Penthièvre in 1757. Scattered foxing and pinholes.
