LE VAILLANT DE SAINT-DENIS (Charles-Prosper). A collection of short treatises on the various aspects of horsemanship, to which has been appended the best diet to be followed for different breeds of horse, in order to derive the greatest benefit from them and keep them in good health for as long as possible. Versailles, Blaizot; Paris, Froullé, 1789. 8vo, red morocco, triple gilt braid, coat of arms in the centre, smooth ornate spine, inner lace, gilt edges (contemporary binding). The only edition of this rare book, written by a royal equerry at the Versailles riding school. He invented a system of suspended bars to prevent the stalls from becoming blocked, which is depicted on a folded engraved plate at the end of the volume. A fine copy in red morocco leather bearing the coat of arms of Joseph-Marie de Lorraine-Elbeuf (1759–1812), the last Prince of Vaudémont, a descendant of the Dukes of Guise, from the branch of the Dukes of Elbeuf.
