*The Terracotta Chariot*, based on the Indian play attributed to King Soudraka. Paris, Piazza, 1921. In-4, dark brown morocco with very rich Persian-inspired decoration, very finely inlaid on the covers and spine, spined back, author’s and title labels in blue-grey morocco with gilt lettering, place and date at the tail, a border and large central fleur-de-lis on a nielloed ground on the covers, blue-grey morocco endpapers framed by fine bands of dark brown and beige morocco, gilded dotted fillet, beige morocco leather medallions and mosaic-worked corner fleurons, marbled paper endpapers, illustrated cover and spine preserved, gilt edges, in a box with flaps (Gruel).
The volume is illustrated with 20 colour plates, stencil-coloured after watercolours by Léon Carré, with captions on the serpents. The text is printed on a tinted background with borders and ornaments inspired by Indian Buddhist art.
Printed in a run of 910 copies; no. 120 of 135 on ‘japon impérial’ paper with a black outline on thin vellum.
A superb copy in perfect condition (apart from some minor wear to the slipcase) in a splendid, richly mosaicked and lined binding by Gruel.
