Description
BOURNEUF, Sieur de] - La Vie de Lazarille de Tormes, ses fortunes, et ses adversitez. Translated into French verse by Sieur de B***. Paris, Louis Chamhoudry, 1653. In-4, (3) ff, 169 pp, paper a little yellowed, title trimmed a little short in the lower margin with small damage to the text, ms. inscriptions, contemporary soft vellum. LOSADA GOYA n°40. Reworking in burlesque verse of the first part of the Vida de Lazarillo de Tormes long attributed to Hurtado de Mendoza, but which is by an anonymous author. The first known edition was published in Alcala de Henares (1554). Translated into French several times, it would appear that Bourneuf used the 1615 edition (translated by Pierre Bonfons), which he simply transposed into verse. His style often becomes coarse and shows a pronounced taste for crudeness of expression. In 1657, Bourneuf published another burlesque poem based on Quevedo's Suenos (V. Losada Goya).
