Orléans, Trepperel, 1572; Paris, Galiot du Pré, 1576; Paris, Estienne Valet, 1587; Lyon, Rigaud, 1583. 4 volumes in-12, fawn calfskin, embossed lace border, gilded coat of arms on the covers, gilt edges (Thouvenin). A very rare complete set of the four books of *Primaleon*, an anonymous chivalric romance translated from the Spanish. 1) First book. Orléans, Trepperel, 1572; printed in Paris by Fleury Prevost in 1571. 12 ff. (illustrated title page, dedication to the Duke of Guise, table of contents), 313 numbered ff. Translated by François de Vernassal. 2) Second book. Paris, Galiot du Pré, 1576. 256 numbered folios, including the title page, the dedication to Louise d’Estampes, and 4 unnumbered folios of the table of contents. First edition of the translation by Guillaume Landré. 3) Third book. Translated from Spanish into French [by Gabriel Chapuys], newly revised and expanded. Paris, Estienne Valet, 1587. 152 numbered folios (including the title page and the dedication to César Panse), 4 unnumbered folios of the table of contents. Chapuys’s translation was first published in 1579. This new, expanded edition is cited by Losada Goya in his address to Paris, Molin and Lyon, Rigaud. 4) Fourth Book. Lyon, Benoist Rigaud, 1583. 219 numbered folios, including the illustrated title page, the privilege charter and the dedication to the ‘Damoyselles Francoyses S.’, 5 folios of preliminary pages. First edition of Gabriel Chapuys’s translation. The privilege was granted to Benoit Rigaud and Abel Langelier.  Copy bound by Thouvenin bearing the coat of arms of Baron Pavée de Vandeuvre. The title page of the first volume is soiled by old colouring; 16th-century annotations on the title page and on the last folio.
