Lot no. 103
Description
MAJORELLE, Nancy (Lorraine). Large wrought iron and bronze floor lamp with seaweed. Circa 1910. Height: 198 cm. Diameter of bowl: 58 cm.
Subsequent tinting has altered the original delicate two-tone effect in which the bronze algae stand out against the silver-coloured structure of the base. Restoration, similar to that carried out on the example in the Musée de l'Ecole de Nancy, would restore this floor lamp to its former glory.
Provenance: Galerie Robert Zehil, Monaco, then private collection, France.
After the First World War, the Majorelle firm named this type of floor lamp "Poincaré" in its catalogues, in memory of a model given to the President of the Republic by his former classmates at the lycée in Bar-le-Duc.
The Musée de l'Ecole de Nancy holds a copy (inv. AD369), with a slightly different decorative treatment for the seaweed. The model in the museum has been the subject of several publications: Alastair DUNCAN, Louis Majorelle: master of art nouveau design, New York, 1991, p. 212; Roselyne BOUVIER, Louis Majorelle: une aventure moderne, Paris, 1991, p. 207; Majorelle: un art de vivre moderne, exhibition catalogue, Musée de l'Ecole de Nancy, Nancy, 2 May - 30 August 2009, p. 116.
