Description
BACCI, Andrea (1524–1600). *De naturali vinorum historia de vinis Italiae, et de conviviis antiquorum libri septem*. Rome: Niccolò Muzi, 1596 [colophon: 1597]. First edition of one of the most important Renaissance treatises on the history of wine, and the first major attempt at a systematic study of European oenology. A physician to Pope Sixtus V, as well as a distinguished scholar and naturalist, Andrea Bacci approaches wine from medical, historical and antiquarian perspectives, examining its qualities, methods of production and therapeutic properties. Particular attention is devoted to the wines of the Italian peninsula, which Bacci compares with those of France, Spain, Germany, Greece and other European regions, tracing their historical origins, winemaking methods and place within the food and drinking cultures of both the ancient and modern worlds. Particularly noteworthy are the chapters devoted to the banquets of antiquity (convivia), in which Bacci reconstructs the customs, rituals and practices surrounding the consumption of wine amongst the Greeks and Romans, combining direct observation with an exceptionally rich body of classical sources. Folio (305 × 210 mm). Engraved architectural title-page featuring a portrait of the author and the coat of arms of the Colonna family; large full-page engraved plate depicting wine-making equipment; woodcut initials and headpieces; errata at the end (slight foxing). 17th-century full vellum binding, spine label with gilt lettering, blue edges (some loss to the covers).
