Description
[LAURENZIANA LIBRARY] BUONARROTI, Michelangelo (1475–1564). The Medici-Laurenziana Library. Architecture by the famous Michelangelo Buonarroti. Florence, 1758.
A rare edition of this series of plates devoted to the architecture of the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, with particular emphasis on its windows and the architectural details of the façade. The work documents one of the supreme achievements of Florentine Mannerist architecture, designed by Michelangelo from 1523 at the behest of Pope Clement VII (1478–1534). By the time Michelangelo left Florence in 1534, the walls of the reading room had been completed; work subsequently continued in accordance with his drawings and the instructions left to those entrusted with carrying the project forward. Of particular note is the fine engraved frontispiece by Carlo Faucci (1729–1784), dated 1756, based on a painting by Giuseppe Zocchi (1711–1767).
Folio (440 × 290 mm). Engraved frontispiece, title-page and 9 numbered engraved plates; uncut (frontispiece formerly mounted before the title-page; slight scattered browning). Original publisher’s plain paper wrappers. (1)
