Description
[ANTIQUE BOOKS] VOLTAIRE
Tales by Guillaume Vadé.
No place [Geneva], 1764.
In-8°, comprising XVI unnumbered preliminary pages, 386 pp. in ch. and 2 unnumbered pp. of tables.
Half shagreen binding (19th century). Smooth spine, decorated with gilt metal tools and gilt fillets. Small crack (1 cm) in the upper part of the fore-edge (front cover).
First collected edition of Voltaire’s tales, comprising twenty-three pieces, including two of Voltaire’s most famous tales in their original editions:
- Jeannot and Colin (pages 86 to 102).
- Le Blanc et le Noir (pages 62 to 85).
The volume opens with a Preface by Catherine Vadé, in which she explains the considerations that led Guillaume Vadé, on the day of his death, to decide to have these tales published.
It also contains the first edition of the ‘Stanza taken from an epic poem composed by Jérôme Carré …’, a canto which Voltaire referred to as “La Capilotade” and which was included in 1771 in “La Pucelle”, forming its eighteenth canto. ‘The Address to the Welches’; ‘The Life of Molière with Brief Summaries of his Plays’, a biography written by Voltaire to be placed at the head of the edition of Molière’s works, illustrated by Boucher, but which was rejected; “A Quaker’s Letter to J. G. Le Franc de Pompignan”, various poems and historical plays.
A very comprehensive work, with a typographical error on page 62, line 5 (avantuce instead of aventure).
