Description
Greenery with two birds. Flemish tapestry, Oudenaarde. Around 1700. Woven in wool and silk (wool warp, wool and silk weft). Height 310 cm; Width: 340 cm. In a wooded, undulating landscape full of detail, two native or exotic birds are depicted, their plumage preserved in beautiful colours. The dirt track on which they are standing guides the eye towards an open background leading to a picturesque fortified town. In the distance are mountains and architectural remains. This tapestry is very finely executed and shows a remarkable quality of workmanship. The imitation frame border with scroll motifs and brown tones is usually attributed to Oudenaarde. This type of composition can also be compared with the work of the Oudenaarde weaver Philippe Behagel. This beautiful greenery has retained its bright colours and its original border. It is in a good state of conservation, with some wear and tear, weakened areas in the silks, and old restorations. It is reduced in height and probably in width.
