Description
Léon SPILLIAERT (1881–1946) Trees in Spring, May 1917. Pencil, watercolour and gouache on paper. Signed and dated ‘L. Spilliaert / Mai 1917’ in the top right-hand corner. 40.9 × 28.3 cm, sheet. 39.7 × 27.2 cm (image area). Provenance: The artist’s family, Brussels. Private collection, Brussels, acquired from a gallery on Rue Ernest Allard in 1994, then passed down through the family until 2026. Attached documents: This work will be included in the Léon Spilliaert catalogue raisonné currently being prepared by Anne Adriaens-Pannier. Certificate by Philippe Serck, court-appointed expert, DSD Art Companions Ltd, dated 16 April 1994. Note: On the reverse, the annotation ‘1917/25’ in the hand of Madeleine Spilliaert, the artist’s daughter. Dated May 1917, this composition depicts a woodland scene punctuated by the tall, dark vertical lines of the tree trunks and foliage rendered in a multitude of coloured brushstrokes, lending the whole a luminous, almost pointillist quality. We would like to thank Mrs Anne Adriaens-Pannier for the information provided and for her advice regarding the inclusion of this work in the catalogue raisonné currently being prepared.
