Description
ARMAN (1928–2005) ‘Masque Punu’, Gabon, gouache on paper, signed. Handwritten inscription on the reverse: ‘Provenance: the artist’s studio’. 34 x 21 cm (image size). Note: Born in Nice and died in New York, Arman established himself as one of the major figures of 20th-century art and a central figure in the New Realists movement, founded alongside Yves Klein at the instigation of the art critic Pierre Restany. From a very early stage, he developed a radical artistic language by directly incorporating manufactured objects into his works, which he regarded as natural extensions of the human hand. He made a name for himself with his famous ‘accumulations’ – assemblages of everyday objects (watches, instruments, rubbish) – which powerfully revealed the mechanisms of production and consumption in modern society. His work forms part of a profound exploration of materiality, repetition and the memory of objects, engaging in dialogue with the experiments of his contemporaries such as César and Jean Tinguely. Based between Nice, Vence and New York, Arman pursued an international career marked by major exhibitions and public commissions. A discerning collector, particularly of African art, he drew inspiration for his work from a keen eye for objects and their symbolic significance, establishing him as a key figure in modern art.
