Description
[THOMAS (Colette)] RENÉ. *The Will of the Dead Girl*. Paris, Gallimard, 1954. 12mo paperback, untrimmed. First edition published under the pseudonym René by Colette Thomas (1918–2006), who had a passionate relationship with the artist Antonin Artaud (1886–1948). Antonin Artaud regarded Colette Thomas as one of the few female authors capable of continuing his quest for a form of expression free from convention; their encounter had a profound influence on the writing of *The Testament of the Dead Girl*. A pupil of Louis Jouvet, the latter himself seems to have been impressed by Colette Thomas, about whom he wrote: ‘The way she approaches the acting profession strikes me as valid because she does not focus on the glamorous, easy and “star” aspects, but on all the hard work and effort that this vocation demands.’ For more on Colette Thomas, see the afterword written by Pacôme Thiellement in the 2021 reprint of the book published by Éditions Prairial, available on the website pacomethiellement.com Non-commercial copy printed on pure-fibre vellum.
