DMITRY POPOV (1911–1988) Set and costume designs for N. V. Gogol’s *The Inspector General*, directed by L. S. Vivien, Pushkin Drama Theatre, Leningrad, 1952. signed with Cyrillic initials and dated ‘DP 52’, signed, annotated in Cyrillic and dated ‘Leonidu Sergeevichu Vivien / D Popov / 4 III 52’ (top left) watercolour and pencil on paper 43.5 × 56.5 cm PROVENANCE: Leonid Sergeyevich Vivien Leonid Sergeyevich Vivien (1887–1966), born Vivien de Châteaubrun, was a Russian and Soviet theatre director, actor and teacher. Founder of the Theatre of the Actor’s Mastery (1928–1938), he was artistic director of the Pushkin Drama Theatre in Leningrad from 1938 until his death in 1966; he was awarded the Stalin Prize (1951), was named People’s Artist of the USSR (1954) and was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1957. Dmitry Fedorovich Popov (1911–1988) was a Soviet theatre and film actor, as well as a teacher. He studied at the A.V. Lunacharsky Workers’ Faculty of Arts in Moscow and graduated from the I.E. Repin Institute in Leningrad in 1938, where he was taught by M.P. Bobychov. He worked at the Leningrad Drama and Comedy Theatre (1938–1940), was principal actor at the Russian Drama Theatre of the Karelian-Finnish SSR (1940–1941), and subsequently as chief artist at the Pushkin State Drama Theatre in Leningrad (1951–1973), whilst also collaborating with the Small Drama Theatre, the Young Spectators’ Theatre, the Lensoviet Theatre, the Musical Comedy Theatre and the Gorky Grand Drama Theatre.
