Description
CARDANO (Gerolamo). Les livres de Hiérome Cardanus... intitulée de la subtilité & subtiles inventions, ensemble les causes occultes, & raisons d'icelles, traduis de latin en françois, par Richard Le Blanc. Paris, Charles l'Angelier, 1556. In-4, fawn calf, spine ribbed, double framed with cold filets and gilt fleurons on the corners, central cold fleuron (Early binding). Extremely rare first edition in French. It was missing from most of the major collections (Lambert, Bitting, Simon, Viel, etc.). De Subtilitate first appeared in 1550. The French edition is a translation of the 1554 edition. It includes all the censored passages. It is a kind of encyclopaedia embracing all the knowledge of the 16th century, a curious mixture of medieval superstitions and ingenious anticipations. Many of the chapters are relevant to our subject, in particular chapter 8, which deals with plants (fruit, vegetables, mushrooms, spices, etc.), and chapter 13, which is devoted to voluptuousness, with important considerations on the sense of smell, wine, cooking recipes and so on. Chapter 17 contains an interesting treatise on distillation with woodcuts. Handwritten bookplate: Serot, 1557. Copy rebacked, spine renewed, corners restored.
