Description
[CADET DE GASSICOURT (Charles-Louis). Cours gastronomique, ou les Dîners de Manant-ville. An anecdotal, philosophical and literary work. Paris, Capelle et Renaud, 1809. In-8, fawn half-basane, smooth spine decorated, marbled edges (Binding of the period). First edition.
The reference in the title to a second edition, dedicated to the Société épicurienne du Caveau moderne, based at the Rocher de Cancale, is misleading. In fact, the volume had never appeared before; only a few chapters had been published in the journal L'Épicurien français. The publishers explain this in a disclaimer at the head of the volume, in which they also try to make people believe that the author is already dead.
Cadet de Gassicourt (1769-1821) was the nephew of Antoine-Alexis Cadet de Vaux. In 1809, he served in the Austrian campaign as Napoleon's first pharmacist. His book is one of the best collections of anecdotes of the period. It is written in the form of dialogues, all dealing with eating and drinking in all countries and at all times.
The large and beautiful gastronomic map of France is the first of its kind. Alongside the names of the towns are the culinary specialities that are made and sold there: poularde in Bourg, snipe pâté in Abbeville, hams in Bayonne, truffles in Périgueux, mustard in Dijon, oysters in Cancale, and so on.
There is also a wine list, which is explained in Chapter 28.
Handwritten note on the title page attributing this work to Cadet de Gassicourt or Colnet. The map has been lined with very fine paper and mounted on a tab. Corners of the binding worn.
