Description
DUFOUR (Philippe-Silvestre). Traitez nouveaux et curieux du café, du thé et du chocolate. Lyon, Jean-Baptiste Deville, 1688. In-12, spotted tawny calf, spine decorated, red edges (Binding of the period). Complete second edition of this essential book on coffee, tea and chocolate. The illustration, engraved by Mathieu Ogier, consists of a title-frontispiece depicting an Arab, a Chinese and an American Indian enjoying these three beverages, three plates out of the text and two head vignettes, one of which is repeated. Philippe-Silvestre Dufour (1622-1687), a chemist and druggist from Lyon, "was also, like his friend Jacob Spon, a renowned lover of rarities and curiosities. His interest in exotic drinks was therefore that of both a great merchant and a great curiosity seeker" (Jean-Marc Chatelain). He went beyond the medical discourse on these drinks, which he nonetheless renewed, and showed himself to be curious about the ways in which they were prepared and consumed. At the end of the volume, the Dialogue du chocolate entre un médecin, un indien et un bourgeois has been translated from Bartolome Marradón by René Moreau. Vicaire, 293 - Bitting, 134 - Oberlé, n°733 (ed. 1685) - Livres en bouche, n°130 (ed. 1685).
