"During her fifth State visit to France, Elizabeth II took part in the celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy. At the end of the ceremonies, a dinner was given in her honour at the Élysée Palace in the presence of some 240 guests. Although menus for state dinners are traditionally set by the Élysée Palace, this one was exceptionally submitted to the Queen, who agreed to foie gras being served, even though her son Prince Charles had banned it from his tables because of his opposition to the practice of force-feeding. The controversy was defused by the choice of the Queen, who is fond of foie gras". (Ch. Marguin).
