ÉMILE PUIFORCAT Set of Two Antique Cutlery Pieces Gilded silver soup ladle (82.4 g) and cream spoon (78.2 g), circa 1857. The ladle bears the hallmarks of Émile Puiforcat and Minerva, guaranteeing that the silver meets the French fineness standard. The spoon bears the hallmarks of Émile Puiforcat and Mercury in a truncated oval — an export hallmark for 2nd-fineness silver (800/000), in use in Paris and the departments from 1 April 1879 to 1994. A forerunner of the famous firm founded in 1820, Émile Puiforcat was part of the great tradition of 19th-century Parisian silversmithing, whose craftsmanship would reach its zenith under his descendant Jean Puiforcat in the following century.
