CELSO LAGAR (1891–1966) “Corrida” Watercolour, ink and gouache on paper, signed lower left. Dimensions (viewing area): 20 × 26.5 cm. Provenance: former collection of Georges Couturat, art dealer, patron and major collector active in Paris during the first half of the 20th century, a close friend of Manguin, Camoin, Cross and Signac, whose collection notably included Caillebotte’s *L’Homme au balcon*. Born in Ciudad Rodrigo in 1891, Celso Lagar moved to Paris in 1911 and quickly established himself as a distinctive figure within the École de Paris, frequenting the avant-garde circles of Montparnasse alongside Modigliani, Lipchitz and Chagall. His work, at the crossroads of Expressionism, Cubism and Fauvism, is characterised by a striking chromatic intensity and lines of great vitality. Bullfighting, a theme deeply rooted in Spanish tradition, was one of the artist’s favourite subjects, through which he expressed with particular vigour the energy and movement characteristic of his pictorial language.
