CELSO LAGAR (1891–1966) "Corrida" Aquarelle, encre et gouache sur papier, signée en bas à gauche. Dimensions à vue : 20 × 26,5 cm. Provenance : ancienne collection de Georges Couturat, marchand, mécène et collectionneur majeur actif à Paris dans la première moitié du XXe siècle, ami proche de Manguin, Camoin, Cross et Signac, dont la collection comprenait notamment L'Homme au balcon de Caillebotte. Né à Ciudad Rodrigo en 1891, Celso Lagar s'installe à Paris en 1911 et s'impose rapidement comme une figure singulière de l'École de Paris, fréquentant les cercles avant-gardistes de Montparnasse aux côtés de Modigliani, Lipchitz et Chagall. Son œuvre, à la croisée de l'expressionnisme, du cubisme et du fauvisme, se distingue par une intensité chromatique marquée et une ligne d'une grande vivacité. La corrida, thème profondément ancré dans la tradition espagnole, constitue l'un des sujets de prédilection de l'artiste, dans lequel il exprime avec une force particulière l'énergie et le mouvement caractéristiques de son langage pictural. Provenance: from the former collection of Georges Couturat, a prominent dealer, patron and collector active in Paris during the first half of the twentieth century, a close friend of Manguin, Camoin, Cross and Signac, whose collection included Caillebotte's L'Homme au balcon. Born in Ciudad Rodrigo in 1891, Celso Lagar settled in Paris in 1911 and quickly established himself as a singular figure of the École de Paris, moving in the avant-garde circles of Montparnasse alongside Modigliani, Lipchitz and Chagall. His work, at the crossroads of Expressionism, Cubism and Fauvism, is distinguished by a striking chromatic intensity and a line of exceptional vitality. The bullfight, a subject deeply rooted in the Spanish tradition, is one of the artist's most cherished themes, through which he expresses with particular force the energy and movement that define his pictorial language.
