In our work, the king is in a three-quarter-length half-body position, wearing a fleurdelisé coat lined with ermine and the collar of the Order of the Holy Spirit. The sovereign is wearing the large brown wig that was characteristic of the official iconography developed during his reign.
This effigy is based on the famous model created by Hyacinthe Rigaud from the 1690s onwards, and widely distributed by his workshop in various variants for the court, the royal administration and those close to power. The quality of the workmanship, particularly in the treatment of the fabrics, lace and coronation mantle strewn with fleurs-de-lis, testifies to a high standard of workshop production, inspired by the master's official prototypes.
Hyacinthe Rigaud was the most sought-after portraitist of the reign of Louis XIV. His famous full-length portrait of the sovereign, painted in 1701 for Philip V of Spain, remains one of the most famous emblems of French painting. The many replicas and variants produced by his studio met with considerable success throughout the 18th century.
