Description
[GASTRONOMY] A beautiful English manuscript of recipes, mainly for pastries, in-8 format, comprising two parts; the first part is most likely in 17th-century handwriting, comprising 37 folios in neat, clearly legible handwriting and containing 65 recipes, including English specialities such as the hard-to-translate ‘Leaden Plaister’, ‘Pickled Walnuts’, Damson pudding, Plum cake and Devonshire White Pot. A note at the end of two recipes appears to read ‘P. Chefroy?’ and ‘Remember me when I am gone, a friend to you and foe to none, P.C.; J. Doute” (which could be roughly translated as “Remember me when I am gone, a friend to you and an enemy to none”), which may well be a whim of the chief editor... This first section, which is smaller in size (18.5 x 14 cm), appears to have been added to the binding at a later date. The second section, dating from the slightly later 18th century, comprises 32 folios, 5 of which are blank, measuring 20x15.5cm, and contains 76 recipes, including those for Cornish Cakes, Sugar Cake, Iced cakes or buns, and Almond pudding and Rice pudding. A beautifully crafted period full vellum binding, with slight flaws and small losses, titled on the spine ‘Ms. Cookery Recipes ’ (Manuscript Cookery Recipes), the recipes are well written and detailed, clearly with an eye to preservation; the pages have remained very clean, a rarity for a cookery manuscript, which is often intended for practical use. A small cluster of worms in the margins of two leaves, nothing serious; a few erasures; a few pages slightly soiled; in good overall condition.
