Élisabeth-Théodore Le Tonnelier, Abbé de BRETEUIL (1712–1781). Letter (partly in the author’s own hand), Paris, 6 January 1764, to M. de Villepion, the King’s Procurator in the bailiwick of Orléans; 4 pages in-4 (including one and a half in the author’s own hand). Concerning the city of Orléans (the Abbé de Breteuil was Chancellor to the Duke of Orléans). He demonstrates that the Council’s decree of 5 October 1759 ‘by which the King ceded to the Duke of Orléans the 4 s. per livre on the ‘droits d’aydes’ of the districts of Orléans and Pithiviers as compensation for the right to levy tax on goods entering the city of Orléans on behalf of the market traders, & the collection of which, in both substance and form, was highly detrimental to trade in the city of Orléans’, does not require letters patent, as the Presidial Judge believes, and may continue to be enforced… He adds, in his own hand, a long postscript, to clarify: ‘It is not possible, without the greatest inconvenience, for matters not to remain as they were; indeed, I have been told that it is being claimed that the city of Orléans did not wish to see the tax abolished’; and he reaffirms the rights of the Duke of Orléans…
