Description
SCALIGER (Julius Caesar). In libros duos, which are entitled *De plantis*, by Aristotle, two books. Paris, Michel de Vascosan, 1556. In-4, hard vellum binding, smooth spine, blue edges (17th-century binding). First edition of this important commentary on the pseudo-Aristotelian treatise on plants (De plantis), now attributed to Nicholas of Damascus. ‘Scaliger sought to advance botany and the study of simples through his admirable editions of three ancient treatises: the De Plantis by Pseudo-Aristotle (Nicolaus of Damascus) and the two works by Theophrastus on plants. All three benefit from the editor’s knowledge of actual specimens. Scaliger attempted to establish a new and more consistent classification of plants but feared that the uninformed might cling to the older descriptions” (DSB). Some marginal notes and old underlining. A stamp bearing the initials ‘FL’ on the title page. Some foxing. Adams, S-587 – Durling, no. 4096 – Pritzel, no. 8088.
