DODOENS (Rembert). Histoire des plantes, en laquelle est contenue la description entière des herbes, c'est-à-dire leurs espèces, forme, noms, tempérament, vertus et opérations. Antwerp, Jean Loë, 1557. In-folio, red half-chagrin, spine decorated with gilt fleurs-de-lis, speckled edges (19th century binding). First edition of the French translation by Charles de l'Écluse, based on the Flemish edition of 1554 but with considerable additions and corrections. It is decorated with an allegorical frame on the title and 840 woodcut figures, 133 of which are new, the others coming from earlier editions of Fuchs' De Historia Stirpium. The work is divided into seven parts, the last of which has a special title: Petit recueil, auquel est contenue la description d'aucunes gommes et liqueurs, provenans tant des arbres, que des herbes. It also contains a table of the properties and virtues of the plants it contains and an index of Greek, Latin, French and Dutch terms. Complete with 4 ff. Rembertus Dodonaeus studiosis medicinae candidatis S. following the title.
