Description
NICOT (Jean). Le Grand dictionnaire françois-latin. Paris, Nicolas Buon, 1618. In-4, olive morocco, double framing of fillets with fleurs-de-lis at the corners, AVCC figure at the inner corners, coat of arms in the centre, smooth spine decorated with the same framing, gilt edges (Period binding). New edition of Jean Nicot's famous French-Latin dictionary, expanded by Guillaume Poille. The diplomat and erudite traveller Jean Nicot (1530-1604), considered to be the introducer of tobacco in France, was also a lexicographer and the father of the first major corpus of French-Latin dictionaries published in 1573 under the title Thresor de la langue françoyse, which is a reworking of the dictionaries by Robert Estienne (1531), Guillaume Budé (1544) and Jean Thierry (1564), augmented by notes by the president Aimar de Rançonnet. The work was further enlarged and arranged in alphabetical order on the initiative of bookseller David Douceur in 1606; then in 1609, again enlarged by Guillaume Poille, "in addition to infinite French dictions, words of navy, venery and faulcery, Latin words forgotten in previous impressions, several researches, antiquities, proverbs and proverbial sentences...". This precious copy is set in a morocco binding bearing the coat of arms of Victor-Amédée de Savoie (1587-1637), Prince of Piedmont, who became Duke of Savoy in 1630. His cipher is interlaced with that of his wife Christine de France (1606-1663), second daughter of Henri IV and Marie de Médicis. The binding was produced between their marriage in 1619 and his accession to the ducal throne in 1630, the coat of arms being that of the crown prince of the House of Savoy, titled Prince of Piedmont, which bears Savoy broken by an azure label. Interior foxed, binding restored, minor rubbing to boards. Brunet, IV, 72.
