Translation and commentary of the Qur'an, Tibyân Tefsiri, by Mehmet Efendi Ayintabi, Ottoman Turkey, copied by Mehmet Hilmi and dated 1212H./1797-98 Superb Ottoman Turkish manuscript on white and yellow paper, Tercüme-i Tibyan fi Tefsiri'l-Kuran by Muhammad b. Hamza al-Dabbagh, or Mehmed Efendi Ayintâbî. 489 folios (978 pages). 33 lines per page in black ink and red lines in gold frames. Richly decorated first double page with illuminated frontispiece and gilt decoration in the margins. Numerous chapter headings indicated by gilded cartouches on a background of gilded interlacing on a blue or blue and red background or in gilded bands. Finely illuminated marginal medallions. Second frontispiece in the middle of the volume. Colophon decorated with floral motifs, signed al-Sayyid Mohammad Hilmi (Mehmed Hilmi) and dated. Last page decorated with a flower in two golds, yellow and green, and floral bouquets on the endpapers in two golds and a silver ribbon. Edges decorated with gilt foliate friezes. Bound in leather with flap and cover decorated in two golds and silver, with floral wreaths forming a mandorla surrounded by spandrels, embellished with stems and foliage and ribbons and bunches of grapes on the flap. In a leather slipcase decorated to match the binding. (Some wetness, one corner of the binding damaged, box damaged at its base and some minor wear to the decoration, four different advertisements, possibly due to missing pages or poorly reassembled after binding). 20 x 30.5 cm Provenance: Bibliothèque orientaliste Maisonneuve, Paris This sumptuous manuscript entitled Tercüme-i Tibyan fi Tefsiri'l-Kuran by Muhammad b. Hamza al-Dabbagh, known in Turkish as Mehmed Efendi Ayintabi (d. 1699), is a translation of the Qur'an into Ottoman Turkish as well as an exegesis based largely, but not exclusively, on the text of Khizr b. 'Abd al-Rahman al-Azdi's (Hizir b. Abdurrahman al-Ezdi) al-Tibyan fi Tafsir al-Qur'an. The author states that he prepared it at the request of Sultan Mehmet IV (1648-1687).
