42 pp., 8 colour lithographs.

Scuffs to the slipcase.
First print run of Alastair’s 8 colour lithographs (separate from the text), 7 of which are signed. Limited edition of 480 copies, numbered and signed by the illustrator. Included is the subscription form featuring a reproduction of one of the compositions.
Walter Pater (1839–1894), a British essayist and critic, published four imaginary portraits between 1885 and 1887, each set at a turning point in the history of ideas or art. Among these portraits is that of Sebastian van Storck, a striking analysis of philosophical solipsism in 17th-century Dutch society.
Alastair, the pseudonym of Baron Hans Henning Voigt (1887–1969), a self-taught German artist, is best known for his work as an illustrator; his style, which oscillates between decadence and Art Deco, has made him a spiritual heir to Aubrey Beardsley.
A very fine copy.
