Description
[Vendée Armies] SAPINAUD DE LA RAIRIE Charles (1760–1829), Vendée general. In November 1793, Sapinaud took command of the Catholic and Royal Army of the Centre and fought against the ‘colonnnes infernales’ in the early months of 1794. Alongside François-Athanase de Charette de La Contrie, Jean-Nicolas Stofflet and Gaspard de Bernard de Marigny, he was one of the principal Vendée generals. Sapinaud finally signed the peace treaty in Nantes at the end of January 1796. He took up arms again during the Hundred Days, in the War of the Vendée and the Chouannerie of 1815. Appointment document (dated 10 June 1815 at the Gaubretière headquarters) for ‘Mr Louis Ussault, member of the Superior Council and former Vendée officer’ to the rank of ‘Adjutant-General of the 2nd Army Corps’, signed ‘the Commander-in-Chief of the Vendée armies, De Sapinaud’, ‘by the Commander-in-Chief, Major-General Auguste Rochejaquelein’ and ‘the General commanding the Army of the Centre, Chevalier de Saint Hubert’. 1 oblong folio sheet (32 x 20 cm) from the 2nd Army Corps, in perfect condition. Detailed biographies of Louis Ussault, Auguste du Vergier de La Rochejaquelein and Charles Sapinaud de La Rairie are enclosed. Appraisal carried out by Pascal GUILLEBAUD. Lot from a voluntary sale.
