Panckoucke, Officer of the Legion of Honour, Associate-Correspondent of the Society of Antiquaries of Edinburgh, the Academies of Archaeology of Rome and Naples, the Societies of Geography, Philotechnics and Antiquaries of the West’) dated 11 August 1842 in Paris, addressed to Jules Janin [Jules Gabriel Janin (1804–1874), writer and theatre critic]; 2pp (Dimensions: 21 x 26.5 cm): ‘My dear Sir, I have just re-read the article and thank you most sincerely for it. I have very few comments to make; I am no critic. I believe one must let everyone have their own style; yours is good, lively, alert and cheerful – do not change a thing: often the fear of a single word leads one into something worse, and I always recall the 1,500 errors found by the Academy in Corneille’s masterpiece [Le Cid], which has remained a masterpiece despite its 1,500 errors. [Corneille, a member of the Académie Française since 1647, popularised the use of ‘Ramusian letters’. Named after Pierre de La Ramée, known as Ramus, author of a *Gramere* in which he advocates a generalised phonetic approach]. My observations will be based on a few facts… [his observations follow, in particular on pages 2 and 7 of the aforementioned article] … C.L.F. Panckoucke’. Address on the reverse: ‘J.G. Janin, 20 rue de Vaugirard’. A small tear in the paper (top left-hand corner) which does not affect the text; a few dark stains which do not affect the text; otherwise in good condition. Enclosed: AIGNAN Etienne (1773–1824), man of letters and playwright. Member of the Académie Française (1814). Dictionary Commission: A copy printed in his name, annotated by Aignan, of pages 133 to 140 of the Académie Française’s dictionary.
