Description
Folio of a large Koran in bihârî India, 18th century Eleven lines in black ink, on a red cross-hatched background, with arabesques animated by flowers and fleurons in reserve. An illuminated medallion and lobed cartouche mark the divisions of the verses in the margin. Condition: mounted on card. Folio 32 x 23 cm (12.6 x 9.1 in.) Bihar script, developed in northern India from the 14th century onwards, is mainly associated with the production of Qur'anic manuscripts in the regions of Bihar and Bengal. It is characterised by its monumental and ornamental character, and by the close integration of text and decoration. This folio illustrates this aesthetic, in which the calligraphy itself becomes a major visual element, in dialogue with the abundant plant decoration. Provenance : Private collection, Paris. A folio from a large Qur'an in bihari script. Eleven lines of text in black ink on a ground hatched in red and animated by foliate arabesques and stylised flowers in reserve; a roundel and a lobed cartouche in the margins mark the verse divisions. The bihari script, developed in northern India from the 14th century onwards, is associated chiefly with Qur'an manuscripts produced in Bihar and Bengal; its monumental and ornamental character - in close dialogue with the surrounding decoration - makes calligraphy itself a major visual element. Laid down on board. India, 18th century.
