Folio d’un grand coran en bihârî
Inde, XVIIIe siècle
Onze lignes à l’encre noire, sur fond hachuré en rouge, et animé d’arabesques animés de fleurs et de fleurons en réserve. Un médaillon et un cartouche lobé enluminés signalent en marge les divisions de versets.
État : contrecollé sur carton.

L’écriture bihârî, développée dans le nord de l’Inde à partir du XIVe siècle, est principalement associée à la production de manuscrits coraniques dans les régions du Bihar et du Bengale. Elle se distingue par son caractère monumental et ornemental, ainsi que par l’intégration étroite entre texte et décor. Le présent folio illustre cette esthétique, où la calligraphie devient elle-même un élément visuel majeur, en dialogue avec un décor végétal foisonnant.

A folio from a large Qur’an in bihari script. Eleven lines of text in black ink on a ground hatched in red and animated by foliate arabesques and stylised flowers in reserve; a roundel and a lobed cartouche in the margins mark the verse divisions. The bihari script, developed in northern India from the 14th century onwards, is associated chiefly with Qur’an manuscripts produced in Bihar and Bengal; its monumental and ornamental character — in close dialogue with the surrounding decoration — makes calligraphy itself a major visual element.
