CROCIERA ATLANTICA ITALIA BRASILE medal. Silver plated bronze. Ribbon missing. This medal commemorates the first major transatlantic crossing in a squadron led by Italo Balbo between December 1930 and January 1931. 12 Savoia-Marchetti S.55A seaplanes flew from Orbetello (Italy) to Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Proving the reliability of Italian aviation and strengthening links with the Italian community in Brazil. This was the forerunner of the famous 1933 cruise to New York. Some wear and patina. Condition II+. CROCIERA ATLANTICA ITALIA BRASILE medal. Silvered bronze with ribbon absent. This medal commemorates the first transatlantic squadron crossing led by Italo Balbo between December 1930 and January 1931. The Savoia-Marchetti S.55A aircraft flew from Orbetello, Italy, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Intended to promote the reliability of Italian aviation and strengthen ties with the Italian community in Brazil, this raid foreshadowed the celebrated 1933 Chicago-New York air cruise.
