Description
Planetary signed "Designed for the new portable orreries by W. Jones" and "and made and sold by W. & S. Jones 30 Holborn London", England, circa 1800.
Planetarium by William and Samuel Jones, London, circa 1800. Overall dimensions: approximately 54 cm wide and 46 cm high.
The planetarium is mounted on a mahogany tripod table 32cm in diameter. The legs are linked by crossed struts in the centre of which is a baluster-shaped ivory decorative element.
Attached to the underside of the table, the brass mechanism rotates the entire solar system.
On the table, a brass mechanism rotates the paper and cardboard globe signed "W&S Jones n° 30 Holborn London"; in the centre, the sun is represented by a brass ball. The moon is missing.
Six brass arms support six small ivory balls of various sizes depicting Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus. The bead representing Mercury is missing.
Around Saturn, an ivory ring. Around Jupiter, four small ivory balls represent its satellites. Around Uranus, five ivory balls also represent satellites.
The equatorial table in coloured and varnished paper lists the months, the signs of the zodiac, the different planets in the solar system and their positions, and the satellites of Saturn and Jupiter.
A cog has been replaced in the mechanism that turns the globe; some of the balls depicting the satellites are missing, the mechanism is seized up, the crank handle is missing, and there are some tears in the paper and accidents to the equatorial table.
An unusual model mounted on a table supported by three legs.
